Summer Emarketing Blues

Summer is officially here, and it can be a difficult time for emarketers. People are off on vacation for anything from long weekends to two and three-week stretches, and shopping online is the last thing on their minds: a quick trip to the local drugstore for sunscreen and insect repellant, and they're good to go.

So what can you do to counter the summer emarketing blues?

  • If you can't beat them, join them. No, we're not talking about going on vacation yourself, but rather about changing the look and feel of emails and landing pages to suit the lighter seasonal moods of potential customers. Find a "fun" angle to present your products or services and incorporate it wherever you can.

  • Use humor. You know that if they're not actually on vacation they're thinking about vacation, so be bold, tell them you know that you're not the first thing on their minds right now ... but that you have something they shouldn't miss out on.

  • Keep it short. Sure, landing pages need enough copy to support your keywords, but brief paragraphs will keep wandering attention far better at this time of year.

  • Offer specials. Call them what you want, but "summer savings" are a great way to get people to open your emails and visit your landing pages. With the economy doing so poorly, no one can afford to miss out on specials, coupons, and other savings.

Whatever you do, it's important to let customers know that you're there, you're still available when they need something, and that neither their summer vacations nor your starting to think about the fall holiday marketing season are making you any less enthusiastic about supplying your products or services!
